Diabetes Technology Inequalities Project

PROJECT PURPOSE
To help children manage their type 1 diabetes using smart devices and apps

The publication of guidelines to improve access to diabetes technology, including Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMS), Insulin Pumps and Hybrid-Closed Loop Systems (HCLS) has given children and young people with diabetes the opportunity to optimise their diabetes management, however without access to a compatible mobile phone the diabetes technology cannot be used. In addition, the monitoring of data from the devices is difficult without access to computers.

Following an audit of children and young people with diabetes across the North East and North Cumbria (NENC) region, there was an acknowledgment that due to high levels of deprivation, there were approximately 450 families who were not able to access diabetes technology as they do not have the means to purchase relevant mobile phones and /or computers.

This project aims to re-purpose NHS and industry mobile devices (and potentially laptops and tablets) to deliver to families who would benefit from having access to diabetes technology.

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (GCM)

The user can check their sugar (glucose) levels at any time with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) or flash monitor.

It lets the user see patterns in their levels and check if their glucose is too high or low. It can help them control their blood glucose levels, as they'll have more information and can take action quickly.

It can help the users and the diabetes team see:

- if the users glucose levels are going up or down

- how the user's glucose levels change over time

- what happens to the users levels when they're asleep
